Taiga weektour

SEK18800

per person

A 5 days of dogsledding to explore the many forests, rivers, lakes and the taiga area of Swedish Lapland.

It is a winter wonderland unique in Europe.

Besides the natural beauty and stunning silence our tour area several kinds of bird and animal life, including reindeer – the mainstay of the sami people -, moose and fox. During our tour season the northern lights are clearly viewable on many cloudless nights and in december and january the twilight during the few hours of daylight is very special.

Each guest has his own dogsled team with 4 dogs. An enjoyable part of this experience is that our guests personally care for their dogs including their daily feeding. Since we are travelling through true wilderness there is no electricity or running water in the cabins along the trails. Candles provide the light and fires of native wood provide the heat. Breakfast, dinner and a small lunch is included for the time of your trip. In the cabins we have gas-heated stoves to cook our meals, but lunch will be usually prepared outside along the trail.

Day 1

Arrival at Kiruna airport/railway station and transfer to our home base (with running water and electricity). Here you will have your first dinner and your guide will outline the tour for you and provide you with necessary information, also checking that nobody left important things at home.

Day 2

After breakfast you will receive an introduction to the basics of sledding, how the dogs are handled and what else you need to know for a safe, successful and enjoyable tour. We pack the sledges with all the necessary equipment and then off we go to the first cabin. The first cabin "Vieksalahti" is located on the banks of the Torne River not far from the "Alajaure" nature reserve. The distance to get there is about 35 km. The cabin has two bedrooms and a lounge. The route is easy to drive and well suited to getting started with dog sledding. Upon arrival we will look after the dogs together, fetch water from the nearby stream and prepare dinner. A visit to the sauna rounds off the day.

Day 3

From “Vieksalahti” the tour then goes to our wilderness camp at the lake “Väkkäräjärvi”. The route is about 55 km long and leads through the old, abandoned village of Sevujärvi. Some of the first settlers in the area settled here in the mid-18th century. The village has been deserted since the 1950s. The route is a bit more challenging to drive, as it meanders through narrow forest with some bends, and with some climbs where the dogs need your help. The “Väkkäräjärvi” camp is very spacious and has several rooms and huts in which you can spend the night. A sauna is of course also available.

Day 4

On this day, the trip continues to “Jäkkälä”, the smallest camp on this tour. The cabin consists of only one room, in which people cook and sleep. A sauna is also available. The cabin itself is located in a small wooded area, east of “Väkkäräjärvi”, and the route there mostly leads over bogs and lakes. The route is about 40 km long.
